Greeting card design has always inspired me but I realized that there was a gap in the industry – Jewish holidays. For this series, I decided to hand letter cards for the holidays that might not be as popular to the secular world, but are highly celebrated in the Jewish one. This project was particularly personal for me because it united two of my passions: hand lettering and my Jewish identity.
I selected the phrase on each card from a popular song about each holiday. The holidays I chose to include are Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Tu Bishvat, Purim, and Passover.
I wanted the cards to each have a distinct look and feel to correspond with the energy of that celebration. From color palette to lettering style to layout, to illustration, each card should evoke the vibe of the holiday. With that said, I wanted the series as a whole to still feel cohesive.
The greeting card industry is highly saturated with the classics: birthday, Valentine’s Day, sympathy, anniversary, etc. While stores like PaperSource have beautiful designs, they only have cards for a fraction of occasions. It is my hope that by designing cards for Jewish holidays, we can diversify the industry. In the end, I’d like to see more celebrations represented.
