Homwork is a weekly lettering challenge issued by legendary hand-letterer Lauren Hom via email and then publicized to the instagram community. I embarked on this challenge at the beginning of 2018 to improve my hand lettering and digital lettering skills and have been creating these pieces every week since. These prompts showcase favorite foods, honest valentines, impactful quotes, nostalgic memories, little white lies, and beyond. Homwork has allowed me to broaden my skillset, try new lettering styles, and force myself outside of my comfort zone. Some work stays purely digital whereas other projects shine best on physical items. Some prompts challenge me to create dynamic layouts while other prompts encourage me to flex my illustration muscles.
Without a doubt, practicing this skill on a regular basis has enhanced my creativity. Hand lettering allows me to be much more liberal with my designs and much less rigid. These prompts have most definitely contributed to that freedom. What homwork has taught me most is the importance of repetition and consistency when developing a new skill. Practice makes perfect certainly rings true. I will continue to participate in this challenge for as long as it runs.
