Creative vs. Corporate: Competing Identities

So, you just got your first big job. You might have worked at other smaller organizations before, but this is a BIG company. You’ve got a 401K, an HSA account, and pet health insurance to boot. You’ve made it, you’re an adult – congratulations! But as a creative, you might feel like you don’t fit in with the buttoned up suits. There are people who show up to the office every day with designer bags and heels, or three piece suits and perfectly coifed hair. And maybe you’ve just got some fancy sneakers.

Confidence is Key

I’ve certainly faced this. It’s not just about how people dress but how they carry themselves, how they speak with corporate jargon, and mainly their confidence. When it comes down to it, it’s all about confidence. And if you don’t feel like you fit in, your confidence is inherently lessened.

Educate Yourself

To this, I would say, find a way to make it your own. It’s ok to have different facets of your personality, as long as it still feels like you. Authenticity is a must. If you wear a blazer just because you feel like you have to, it’ll never fit quite right. That being said, while it is important to honor your creative side it is just as necessary to educate yourself about the company. You should endeavor to understand all the facets of your industry. The more information you have, the better you can represent yourself.

Your Creative Workspace

Another way to marry your creative and corporate identities is to decorate your desk. This will make the space feel like your own. The items on your desk might even prove to be great conversation starters with coworkers. It is a way to physically represent yourself and your interests and to make your space feel a little less corporate.

It’s important to remember, you’re constantly evolving. Something that has worked for you before might not continue to do so. Embrace trying new things, seeing what fits and what doesn’t. But above all else, you do you.
